Agartala August 17: The BJP has expanded the representation of the Northeast in its national organisation with three leaders from the region receiving key responsibilities. Deb will serve as National General Secretary, while Nagaland MP Phangnon Konyak and Assam BJP leader Mriganka Deo Barman will serve as National Secretaries.
The party announced the appointments on Monday as part of BJP National President Nitin Nabin’s new team of office-bearers.
Biplab Deb Gets Key National Role
Deb’s appointment marks a major step in his political career after several years at the forefront of Tripura politics.
He previously served as Tripura BJP president before becoming Chief Minister in 2018. His tenure began after the BJP secured a historic victory in the Tripura Assembly elections.
The result ended the CPI-M’s 25-year rule in the state. Deb led the BJP government from March 9, 2018, to May 14, 2022.
He stepped down as Chief Minister in May 2022. Manik Saha then took over as Tripura Chief Minister.
Deb subsequently entered the Rajya Sabha. He represented Tripura in the Upper House from September 2022 to June 2024.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Deb contested from West Tripura. He won the seat and became a member of the Lok Sabha.

Two More Northeast Leaders Join National Team
The BJP has also appointed Phangnon Konyak and Mriganka Deo Barman as National Secretaries.
Konyak is a Rajya Sabha member from Nagaland. Her appointment gives the state a prominent position in the party’s national organisational structure.
Deo Barman comes from Assam and has held several responsibilities within the state BJP. He previously served as General Secretary of the Assam BJP.
He also led the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in Assam as its state president. At present, he serves as Vice President of the Assam Olympic Association.

The workers expressed their joy and extended greetings to Deb on his new organisational responsibility. The celebration included bursting firecrackers outside the apartment complex.
