Agartala, August 16: Independence Day (I-Day) celebrations at Churaibari Class XII School took a violent turn on August 15 after two groups of students allegedly clashed on the school premises. The confrontation reportedly followed an earlier dispute over membership fee collection by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
The incident left six students injured. Four of them were taken to Kadamtala Social Hospital before being referred to the District Hospital in Dharmanagar.
Dispute Over ABVP Membership Collection
According to ABVP members, the dispute started several days ago. The disagreement reportedly involved the collection of membership fees at Churaibari School.
ABVP member Birat Nath alleged that a group of around 30 people attacked them when they visited the school on Saturday. He claimed that four ABVP members suffered serious injuries.
One of the injured students reportedly sustained a head injury.
Another ABVP member, Arghadip Debnath, said the earlier disagreement over membership fee collection led to Saturday’s confrontation. He identified the injured ABVP members as Tanish Pal, Himadri Nath, Birat Nath and Akash Malakar.
Two Churaibari Students Also Injured
The other side has made separate allegations. Churaibari School students Imran Hossain and Sanu Chowdhury were also reportedly injured during the clash.
They alleged that nine to 10 students from Kadamtala School entered the Churaibari school premises. The group allegedly attacked them following the earlier dispute.
The two students said they managed to escape by running away.
Both sides have therefore accused the other of initiating the violence. Police will determine the sequence of events through the investigation.
Police Step Up Security
The clash occurred while Independence Day programmes were underway at the school. The incident created tension in the surrounding area.
Police from Churaibari police station reached the spot after receiving information about the clash. Police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel later increased security in the area.
Security personnel were also deployed outside the school to prevent any further escalation.
Case Registered, Investigation Underway
Police sources said a case has been registered following a complaint from the ABVP side. Officials are also looking into allegations made by the students from Churaibari School.
The investigation will establish the circumstances that led to the clash and identify those responsible. Authorities have maintained increased vigilance in the area amid the tense situation.
The incident has also raised concerns over student disputes linked to organisational activities inside and around educational institutions.
