Tripura is steadily moving towards healthcare self-reliance with Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital emerging as the state’s premier centre for advanced treatment. Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said the government’s focus on modern medical education, specialist healthcare and cutting-edge technology has significantly reduced the need to refer patients outside the state.

Agartala, August 1: Tripura is steadily strengthening its healthcare ecosystem by expanding advanced medical facilities, specialist education and research infrastructure. The state government now aims to make Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital one of the leading centres for medical education and super-speciality healthcare in Northeast India.
Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha outlined this vision while inaugurating the 22nd Foundation Day celebrations of AGMC and GBP Hospital at the KLS Auditorium in Agartala on Saturday.
The Chief Minister said the government’s long-term objective is to ensure that people receive quality treatment within Tripura instead of travelling to hospitals in other states.
Advanced Treatment Reduces Patient Referrals Outside Tripura
One of the most significant achievements highlighted during the programme was the sharp decline in patient referrals outside the state.
Dr. Saha said there was a time when patients suffering from even moderately complicated diseases had to seek treatment elsewhere due to the lack of specialised medical facilities.
The situation has changed considerably over the past few years.
According to him, AGMC and GBP Hospital now perform several complex surgical procedures successfully because of experienced doctors, better infrastructure and the use of modern medical technology.
As a result, many patients now receive advanced treatment within Tripura itself, reducing both financial burden and emotional stress on families.
The Chief Minister described this as a major step towards healthcare self-reliance.
Kidney Transplants Mark New Milestone
The state’s growing medical capability has also been reflected in organ transplant services.
Dr. Saha said Tripura has already completed nine successful kidney transplants.
He added that the government has already begun preparations to introduce liver and heart transplant services in the coming years.
These specialised facilities are expected to further strengthen Tripura’s position as an emerging healthcare hub in Northeast India.
Medical Education Expansion Supports Healthcare Self-Relianceย
The Chief Minister said improving healthcare requires continuous investment in medical education.
He recalled that Tripura once had very limited MBBS seats. Today, government medical colleges have significantly expanded undergraduate medical admissions.
The state has also increased postgraduate medical education opportunities and introduced specialised courses to prepare skilled healthcare professionals.
Dr. Saha said the government has established a Dental College within a short period and is continuing to strengthen its infrastructure.
He also informed the participants that work on setting up an independent Health University is progressing rapidly.
Once operational, the proposed university will support medical education, research and specialised skill development across the state.
Healthcare Institutions Must Go Beyond Treatment
Speaking on the broader role of medical institutions, Dr. Saha said hospitals should not be viewed merely as centres for treating diseases.
He said institutions like AGMC should also become centres of knowledge, scientific research, innovation, compassion and human service.
The government is therefore encouraging technology-driven medical education while promoting research and developing skilled healthcare professionals.
Affordable Healthcare Remains a Priority
Alongside infrastructure development, the government is also focusing on patient welfare.
The Chief Minister said healthcare services are reaching people through schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, Mukhyamantri Jan Arogya Yojana, Ayushman Bharat and Mukhyamantri Sarvajan Arogya Abhiyan.
He also highlighted Tripura’s achievements in preventive healthcare.
According to him, about 81.7 per cent of eligible children received complete immunisation during April and May of the 2026-27 financial year.
To improve patient convenience, GBP Hospital has introduced subsidised meals for attendants at only Rs 10.
Construction of a large Bharat Mata Canteen and a modern night shelter is also underway to provide better facilities for patients’ families.
AGMC Signs MoU to Strengthen Community Healthcare
During the programme, AGMC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ramakrishna Mission, Viveknagar.
Under the agreement, the Mission’s ‘Niramaya’ Medical Service Unit will function as an additional Urban Health Training Centre under AGMC and GBP Hospital.
The partnership is expected to improve community-based medical education, practical training for students and public health outreach programmes.
Vision for a Healthcare Hub in Northeast India
Dr. Saha said establishing a government medical college in Tripura was once considered an ambitious dream.
Today, AGMC has evolved into one of the region’s prominent institutions for medical education, research and specialised healthcare.
He reiterated that the government’s vision extends beyond infrastructure expansion.
The ultimate goal, he said, is to build a healthcare system where Tripura residents receive advanced treatment, quality medical education and world-class healthcare services within the state itself.
With expanding super-speciality services, organ transplant programmes, increased medical education capacity and community healthcare partnerships, Tripura is steadily positioning itself as an emerging healthcare destination in Northeast India.
