Agartala: State Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma has said his recent visit to New Delhi opened the door for several important development initiatives for the state.

He shared details of the visit while addressing media persons and highlighted discussions with senior Union ministers and top government officials.
He began by thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tripura Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha. He said both leaders have consistently supported initiatives aimed at improving the lives of people in Tripura, especially tribal communities.
According to him, the Delhi visit focused on education, infrastructure, employment and welfare measures for the state’s tribal population.
Bikash Debbarma Meets Union Ministers in Delhi
Bikash Debbarma said he met Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram, Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.
He said every meeting focused on issues affecting Tripura. Tribal education remained the top priority throughout the discussions.
He described the meetings as positive and said they produced encouraging responses from the Union government.
Proposal for Tribal Students’ Hostels in Delhi
One of the major demands raised during the visit was the construction of separate hostels for tribal students from Tripura in Delhi.
Bikash Debbarma said the proposal includes a 100-seat girls’ hostel and a 100-seat boys’ hostel.
He said Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha had already written to the Delhi government requesting land for the project. He also submitted a separate request during his visit.
According to him, the Lieutenant Governor assured that land would be allotted for the proposed hostels.
He said the project would benefit tribal students who travel to Delhi for higher education. Many students struggle because of limited financial resources and the lack of affordable accommodation.
Education Can Change the Future of Tribal Youth
Bikash Debbarma said Tripura lies in India’s northeastern frontier along the Bangladesh border. He noted that many tribal families continue to face educational and economic challenges.
He alleged that these issues did not receive adequate attention during the previous Left Front government.
He praised the present state government for giving greater importance to tribal welfare.
He said better hostel facilities would help more students pursue higher education in reputed universities in Delhi.
According to him, improved access to education would enable more young people from Tripura to become IAS, IPS, TCS and TPS officers in the future.
He thanked Chief Minister Manik Saha for taking up the issue with the Delhi government and said the initiative would strengthen educational opportunities for tribal students.
Demand for More Eklavya Schools
Bikash Debbarma also discussed education with Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram.
He said the state government has requested approval for 10 more Eklavya schools in Tripura.
According to him, the proposal received a positive response.
He further announced that six new schools would soon be inaugurated with the support of the Union Tribal Affairs Ministry and the Tripura government.
He expressed confidence that the expansion of educational institutions would improve access to quality education for tribal students across the state.
Railway Connectivity Gets Major Attention
Railway development was another major issue during the Delhi visit.
Bikash Debbarma said he submitted a memorandum to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw seeking better railway services for the Mungiakami area.
He claimed that three express trains have now received stoppages at Mungiakami railway station following the request.
He said the additional stoppages would help students, businesspersons, job seekers and patients travelling to different parts of the country.
He thanked the Railway Minister and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for extending railway facilities to the region.
He also requested further development of Mungiakami railway station. His proposal included station beautification, model station status and additional train stoppages.
According to him, the Railway Minister assured that the proposals would receive consideration.
Textile Sector Seen as Employment Driver
Bikash Debbarma also met Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh.
He said the discussion focused on strengthening Tripura’s handloom and textile sector.
According to him, the Union minister assured support for expanding textile-related activities in the state.
He believes stronger investment in the textile sector would create employment opportunities for unemployed youth. It would also help economically weaker families become self-reliant.
He described the initiative as an important achievement for Tripura’s economic development.
