In 1961, Tripura’s literacy rate was only 20.24%. Today, it has transformed into 95.6% effective literacy (as per PLFS).
This remarkable achievement has been made possible through the tireless efforts of 943 Social Awareness Centres and 2,228 volunteers of the Youth Literacy Corps under the ULLAS–New India Literacy Programme (NILP).
Standing at a historic juncture, Tripura has today been declared the country’s third ‘Fully Literate State’.
On this occasion, I encouraged and congratulated all the newly literate individuals”, the Chief Minister wrote.

A state government official stated that this remarkable achievement was made possible by the effective implementation of the ‘ULLAS (Understanding Lifelong Learning for All in Society) – New India Literacy Programme’.
