CPIM MLA and Leader of the Opposition in Tripura Jitendra Choudhury raised serious concerns over the potential closure of 160 schools in West Tripura District. Choudhury addressed a detailed letter to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, emphasizing the critical importance of education and warning of the negative impacts such closures could have on the state’s educational landscape.
Choudhury’s letter highlighted the government’s consideration of closing these schools based on a list provided by the District Education Officer, citing low enrollment numbers. He also noted that similar actions appear underway in the state’s other seven districts. He recalled that during the previous tenure of Dr. Saha, there were attempts to close 961 schools, mainly located in TTAADC areas, under similar pretenses.
Choudhury wrote, “The rise of Tripura’s democratic movement is deeply rooted in the popular Janasiksha Andolan (People’s Education Movement).”
Referring to the previous LF Government regime in the State, he pointed out that Tripura achieved remarkable literacy rates, with 100% enrollment and nearly zero dropouts. The Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, echoed this vision with the slogan ‘Education for All’.
He attributed the state’s educational success to setting up new schools in almost every habitation ensuring education accessible even in the most remote areas. Choudhury stressed that the aim was to provide education at every student’s doorstep, minimizing distance as a barrier.
Choudhury urged the government not to close any existing school based on low enrollment and instead prioritize the goal of providing education to every child, as mandated by the RTE Act, 2009. He warned that closing schools would negatively impact the state’s progress and the future of its children.
In the letter Choudhury also expressed opinions on education-related issues. He alleged, due to sporadic teacher recruitment over the past six years, coupled with the episode involving 10,323 teachers and numerous retirements, there are many vacancies in the Education Department. A special drive should be initiated to fill these vacancies promptly, Choudhury suggested.
Commenting on the Vidyajyoti Scheme, the CPIM leader alleged ‘Vidyajyoti’ initiative has caused frustration among students and stakeholders. This should be scrapped in favor of providing equal opportunities to all schools, whether urban or rural.
He expressed concern about the growth of private educational institutions and said it is not a good sign for a progressive society. The government should rejuvenate its educational programs ensuring proper infrastructure, adequate manpower, updated scientific syllabi, and effective management in public schools.
