Tripura will launch an awareness drive on the three new criminal laws across the State from July 1.
The Union Home Secretary reviewed the progress on implementation of three new criminal laws with administration officials of Tripura on Friday.
Notably, Union Home Minister Amit Shah placed three new bills – Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023 and Bharatiya Sakshya Bill (BSB), 2023 – in the parliament.
The Union Minister placed these three bills during the monsoon session in August, 2023.
The new laws were passed by Parliament in the Winter Session. President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the three laws on December 25.
These bills were tabled to repeal the British-era Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act, respectively.
These three new laws will come into effect from July 1.
To ensure proper implementation, the Union Home Secretary today reviewed the progress on the implementation of three new criminal laws with senior officials of the relevant departments of the state administration of the Government of Tripura.
The meeting was held through video conferencing at the Secretariat and was attended by the state Chief Secretary JK Sinha, Home, Information and Culture, Law and Health Secretaries, Director General of Police of the state, Member Secretary of the Legal Services Authority and other senior officials.
Sources in the Secretariat said that the Director General of Police and the Home Secretary informed the Union Home Secretary about the extent of training given to police and administration officials on the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023 and Bharatiya Sakshya Bill (BSB), 2023.
In this connection, Director General of Police Amitabh Ranjan said a program will be taken up in each police station across the State to make the common people aware of the three new criminal laws on July 1 – the day when these new laws will become effective.
