The SP (west) of Tripura Manik Das has on Monday suspended a head constable of East Agartala police station Gayatri Das for her alleged nexus with a ‘Ganja’ mafia. Besides, her mobile phone was seized and a thorough inquiry into the case was ordered. The matter was first exposed by “News Vanguard” with a breaking story landing the corrupt constable in suspension.
On Sunday, head constable Gayatri Das , a resident of Mohanpur area, has been heard speaking in detail with a ‘Ganja’ mafia of her place Prashanta Chakraborty on how she would have to lift a consignment of ‘Ganja’ from where and deliver to a particular place.
The mobile conversation somehow got leaked and the News Vanguard aired news in details, drawing the attention of higher police authority.
After initial inquiry Gayatri was put under suspension and her mobile set was confiscated but Prashanta Chakraborty could not be nabbed as he had fled.
Police sources said that more stringent action would be taken after the completion of inquiry.
Police sources said on condition of anonymity that despite the state government and the chief minister’s announcement immediately after coming to power that the menace of ‘Ganza’ cultivation would be eradicated in many parts of the state cultivation of ‘Ganja’ is going on in full swing under the patronage of some mafia elements that are now under the radar of the police department.
“So far 88 police personnel including Gayatri Das have either been suspended or arrested for alleged illegal liaison with ‘Ganja’ cultivators ; more than 650 civilians have also been arrested and incarcerated for involvement in ‘Ganja’ cultivation and smuggling” said sources.
