In a landmark move towards the economic and infrastructural development of Tripura, the state government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) of the Tata Group. This agreement, which marks a significant milestone for Tripura’s hospitality sector, aims to propel the state’s tourism industry to new heights by introducing world-class accommodations and services.

MoU Signing Ceremony: A Momentous Occasion

The MoU was signed at the conference hall of the Tripura Institution for Transformation office, in the presence of several esteemed dignitaries. Attendees included Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha, Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma, Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, Industries and Commerce Department Secretary Kiran Gitte, Finance Department Secretary Apurva Roy, and Tourism Department Secretary U.K. Chakma. Representing IHCL at the event were Senior Vice president (Operations) K. Mohanchandran and Area Director and General Manager Jayanta Das, among other senior officials.

Speaking to the media at the signing ceremony, Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha expressed his enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing that this was the first collaboration between the Tripura government and the Tata Group in the tourism and hospitality sector. He highlighted that such initiatives align with the state’s broader vision of economic transformation and modernization, with a specific focus on attracting investment, generating employment, and preserving cultural heritage.

In a social media post, Dr Saha wrote, “A significant step towards boosting tourism in Tripura.

Glad to be present during the signing of MoU between the Government of Tripura and Indian Hotels Company Ltd. (IHCL) for development of Taj Pushpavanta Palace Hotel.

This world-class 5 star hotel with four exclusive rooms & touch of royal era will be a milestone in the State’s history, enabling the people from the world to know more about the Maharajas of Tripura”.

The Project: A New Era for Tripura’s Tourism Industry

As part of the MoU, IHCL will undertake the construction of a luxury hotel named ‘Taj Pushpabanta Palace,’ which will be developed at the historic Pushpabanta Palace, also known as the Raj Bhavan. The project, spanning 7.78 acres, is set to blend modern hospitality standards with the state’s rich historical essence.

The original structure of the heritage-rich Pushpabanta Palace will be meticulously restored. This area will serve as the hotel’s reception and public area. Four regal-style suites will be developed within the main building, offering guests a unique opportunity to experience the grandeur of the erstwhile Manikya dynasty. Additionally, an expansive modern accommodation facility comprising 100 rooms will be built outside the main palace premises, ensuring a seamless fusion of heritage and contemporary luxury.

The estimated cost of the project is ₹250 crore, signifying a major investment in Tripura’s hospitality infrastructure. The Chief Minister emphasized that this initiative is expected to significantly boost the state’s tourism industry by attracting visitors from across India and abroad. Tourists will not only get to enjoy world-class accommodations but will also gain insight into the state’s rich tribal traditions, cultural heritage, and historical significance.

Economic and Cultural Impact

The development of Taj Pushpabanta Palace is poised to have a profound economic impact on the state. The Chief Minister underscored that the project would create employment opportunities for more than 200 local residents, thereby contributing to the state’s socio-economic upliftment. The influx of tourists is anticipated to drive revenue generation for local businesses, artisans, and service providers, fostering sustainable economic growth.

In addition to the hotel project, IHCL is expected to play a pivotal role in the future development of Tripura’s prominent tourism destinations. The government envisions a strategic partnership with the Tata Group to further enhance the state’s tourism appeal through infrastructure development and branding initiatives.

Commitment to a Modern and Progressive Tripura

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tripura’s government is steadfast in its commitment to transforming the state into a modern, investor-friendly destination. The Chief Minister reaffirmed that the collaboration with IHCL is a step forward in realizing this vision. He also urged the hotel authorities to expedite the construction process to ensure timely project completion.
