Agartala (Tripura), June 18: Tripura University—also known as Tripura Central University—has recorded a modest improvement in its all-India ranking among Central Universities.
However, according to the Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF) 2025 report, it continues to rank the lowest among Central Universities in the North Eastern region,
The IIRF recently released its comprehensive national rankings for over 2,500 educational institutions across India, covering universities, engineering colleges, B-Schools, and specialized institutes.
As per the latest IIRF data, Tripura University moved up to the 44th position in the 2025 rankings, showing a slight improvement from its 47th position in 2024. It may be mentioned, this is a significant fall from its 28th rank in 2023, highlighting a sharp dip followed by a marginal recovery.
Among Central Universities in Northeast India, Tripura University remains at the bottom for the second consecutive year, holding the 44th spot in 2025.
Rajiv Gandhi University in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, tops the list in the Northeast with an impressive All India Rank (AIR) of 13. Tezpur University in Assam follows with AIR 24, while Mizoram University in Aizawl stands third in the North East with AIR 25.

In terms of index scores, Rajiv Gandhi University, among the NE Universities , secured the highest with 971.78 points, whereas Tripura University scored 901.00, reflecting a wide performance gap.
Interestingly, in the 2023 rankings, Tripura University had outperformed Central Agricultural University by seven ranks. But in 2024, it suffered a sharp fall to the 47th position—its lowest—and though it has now climbed slightly to 44, it still remains at the bottom among its northeastern peers while the Central Agricultural University climbed up from its AIR 35 in 2023 to AIR 26 in 2025.
The report underscores the growing need for consistent academic and administrative reforms at Tripura University to regain its lost ground and improve its academic reputation.
