Tripura Youth Congress appeals to THRC over alleged BJP-backed attacks and threats against Shahjahan Islam’s family & minority community in Agartala
AGARTALA (Tripura) June 10: The Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress formally submitted a deputation to the Chairman of the Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC), Justice (Retd) Arindam Lodh in Agartala on Tuesday (Jun 10), alleging grave human rights violations against the family of its Vice-president, Md. Shahjahan Islam, and the minority community living in Shantipara, Agartala.
The delegation led by State Youth Congress president Neel Kamal Saha urged the Commission to ensure the safety and security of Shahjahan’s family and protect the human rights of the local minority residents.
Notably, Shahjahan Islam made a social media post, in relation with celebration of Eid-al-Adha, in which he made derogatory comments on Dr Manik Saha, the State Government and other BJP leaders including party’s minority Morcha leaders. This sparked huge outrage and tension prevailed in Agartala’s Shantipara where Shahjahan lives.
A group of people, allegedly BJP activists held agitation in front of his house and reportedly ransacked it. While different Morcha’s of BJP stepped up pressure on police demanding Shahjahan’s arrests, Tripura Pradesh Congress and CPIM, pointing out the alleged attack in Islam’s residence by BJP activists, criticised and blamed the BJP-led Government in Tripura.
Today, Youth Congress submitted a deputation to THRC in which they claimed, the incident in question occurred on June 8, 2025, at approximately 10:30 pm, when alleged “armed miscreants sheltered by the ruling BJP party” attacked the residence of Md. Shahjahan Islam at Masjid Patti, Shantipara in Agartala.
‘The attack, reportedly centered around a Facebook live broadcast, resulted in the vandalization of his home, destruction of valuable furniture, and “indecent behavior” towards female family members’, Youth Congress leaders claimed.

The Youth Congress further mentioned that instead of apprehending the actual attackers, the East Police had arrested Shahjahan’s elderly father and brother, who were ‘unconnected’ to the incident. Both have since been sent to 14 days of judicial custody.
The deputation further highlighted ‘escalating’ threats and intimidation against Shahjahan’s family. It was alleged that “some BJP workers” are conspiring to evict Shahjahan from his residence and have issued an “ultimatum” to the entire minority community in the area to leave.

Shahjahan’s elderly mother, wife, and nine-month-old son are reportedly under immense pressure to vacate their home.
Most alarmingly, the Youth Congress states that “BJP-backed anti-social elements” have threatened Shahjahan’s wife and mother with the demolition of their house by bulldozer and even death if they do not leave by 4 pm today, Youth Congress leaders claimed.
According to the party activists, “The Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress views these actions – the arrest of innocent family members, the threats of eviction, and the intimidation of the minority community – as ultimate examples of human rights violations.”
