Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan’s main opposition party will become the island’s first female president in a landslide victory over the ruling Kuomintang Saturday, as voters turned their backs on closer China ties. The public dissatisfaction over the economy and the outgoing leader gave Tsai a huge lead over her nearest opponent from the ruling party, Eric Chu. Thanking the people for the huge mandate, the first female President of Taiwan vowed to build a new era of politics. Addressing a huge gathering Saturday night after her victory, Tsai vowed to greatly contribute towards peace and stability in the region.
