The Guwahati High Court has slapped show-cause notices to the Union ministry of railways and the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). News agencies reported, the Court has issued the show cause notice asking why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against them for failure to complete the Silchar-Lumding broad-gauge project within the stipulated date.

The bench, comprising Chief Justice K. Sreedhar Rao and Justice P.K. Saikia, served the notices to R.N. Singh, Secretary of the Ministry of Railways, R.K. Gupta, General Manager of NFR, B.N. Bhaskar, Deputy Chief Engineer of NFR, and Ajit Pandit, Chief Administrative Officer, NFR, on Oct 7 in connection with a contempt petition filed by a Silchar-based NGO – Citizens’ Forum, sources added.

According to News agencies, Shyamal Kanti Deb and Dhruva Kumar Saha had filed the public interest litigation (PIL) before the high court in 2013. In its earlier judgment, the court had asked railway authorities to complete the project within the scheduled deadline – March 31, 2015 – otherwise risk being held in contempt of court.
