September 25, 2017: Beating all the odds, Agartala along with other areas of Tripura has geared up and wore a festive look on the eve of Maha Shashti tomorrow. In the wake of recent violence, stringent security measures have already been put in place to ensure peaceful celebration of Durga Puja. “The cops are alert. We are leaving no stone unturned to avoid any untoward incident during puja days,” said Superintendent of Police (SP), West Abhijit Saptarshi.
Thousands of people – both Bengalis and tribal people – already started celebrating the Durga Puja festivities with traditional ‘dhaaki’, ‘bhog’, ‘dhunuchi nach’ and cultural functions all over the state. Children clad in new dresses are crowding the Puja Pandals.
Trade on the eve of Durga Puja took a serious beating due to implementation GST, fallout of demonetization, recent floods in NE States. Recent spate of violence in various parts of West and Khowai District has further affected business. “Some of the rural markets in the clash-hit areas like Jirania, Golaghati, Khowai and Ranir Bazar are yet to get back in normalcy as a fear psychosis is still hunting the people residing at such locations’, stated traders of affected areas.
Tripura Police urged the people not to fall prey to any rumours. A press communiqué from Police Head Quarters (PHQ) stated, “To check any information relating to law and order, public may contact PHQ telephone number- (0381) 231-0177 or local police stations.”
