October 02, 2017: Along with the nation, 148th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi – the Father of the Nation – was also observed in Tripura today in a befitting manner. Several programmes were held to mark the Day. Responding to call by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for observing Gandhi Jayanti as Swachchata Diwas, several organizations held Safai Abhiyan today.
In the main programme, Governor Tathagata Roy unfurled the national flag and paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Gandhi Ghat in Agartala. West District administration organized another programme near the Gandhi statue at Circuit House. State Prison Minister Manindra Reang was present in both the programmes and paid homage to the father of the nation.
Both the Congress and BJP also observed Gandhi Jayanti. BJP state unit president Biplab Kumar Deb along with other leaders paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Gandhi statue near Circuit House.
Biplab among other party leaders also participated in a cleanliness drive conducted by the party at Circuit House. Besides, all units of Pradesh BJP across the State also took part in cleanliness drive to mark the Gandhi Jayanti. Speaking on the occasion, Deb said, Mahatma Gandhi, besides standing for liberty and freedom, also championed the cause of cleanliness, and the ‘Clean India’ campaign is a tribute to his values.
On this occasion, Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee organized a rally in the early morning traversing through different streets of the city. TPCC president Birajit Sinha paid floral tributes to Mahatma’s portrait at Kailashahar Congress Bhavan. The TPCC leaders including MLA Gopal Chandra Roy and Pijush Kanti Biswas remembered Mahatma Gandhi on his 148 birth anniversary in befitting manner in front of Agartala Congress Bhavan.
