October 14: Protesting against merger of Tripura with the Indian Union, a banned tribal terrorist organization has given a call to observe October 15 as ‘Black Day’ in Tripura. The outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) called on tribal communities of Tripura to observe Sunday – October 15 as a mark of protest against the merger with the Indian Union as well as settlement of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. The ‘Day’ will also be observed to express solidarity with demand for restoration of rights of tribal people. Banned in 1997, NLFT sought Tripura’s secession from India.
NLFT lost its support base way back in 2004-05 after sustained security operation and resistance by local tribal people. Since then, nany NLFT guerrillas shunning violence, surrendered to security forces which ultimately weakened the terrorist group significantly.
However, the security agencies are maintaining tight vigil along the Indo-Bangla Border as well as in sensitive areas. In the run up to State Assembly Polls, possibility of disrupted activities by NLFT can not be ruled out, Polices stated.
