November 01, 2017: A calm and cool evening turned violent at Belmura (Khayerpur) near Agartala following a clash between CPIM and BJP supporters. Claiming innocence, both the parties blamed each other and held responsible for the violence. Reportedly, several persons including three CPIM supporters were injured while six bikes were set ablaze and one car was damaged in the violence. The situation is stated to be under control.
CPI-M alleged that a group of BJP activists, who were returning from a party programme, had attempted to set the local ruling party office on fire and attacked CPI-M supporters who tried to resist the BJP men.
Local CPI-M MLA Pabitra Kar said, “The violence erupted after the local people of Belmura resisted a group of BJP supporters mostly ‘outsiders’ who tried to create unrest there.
However, we asked our party men to have patience and requested police to take appropriate measures to avoid any further clash.”
He said three ruling party supporters- Swapan Sabar, Gopi Debnath (pradhan of local panchayat) and Nimai Debnath were injured by the BJP activists.
Contradicting the claim of CPIM, BJP alleged, some of the local CPI-M cadres misbehaved with the BJP party men near the ruling party office while BJP activists were returning after attending programme,
BJP sources alleged, as BJP activists protested, the CPI-M cadres launched an attack on them and ransacked the vehicle of the District leader Ashit Roy. Besides, several party activists were injured in the attack incident.
All in a sudden the situation turned volatile after six bikes were set ablaze allegedly by the ruling party supporters.
According to sources, the entire episode had occurred in presence of policemen but they were inactive.
Later on, large contingents of police and TSR personnel led by the SDPO Jirania reached the spot and managed to bring the situation under control.
