Imphal (Manipur), July 29: In a solemn and dignified ceremony the Assam rifles commemorated supreme sacrifice of Havildar (Late) Pranay Kalita, Rifleman (Late) Ratan Salam, and Rifleman (Late) Methna Konyak.
The tribute offering event was held on Tuesday honouring the memory of the three gallant soldiers who laid down their lives during a critical counter-insurgency operation in Manipur’s Chandel district in 2020. The event served as a powerful tribute to their unmatched courage and dedication to national security.
The wreath-laying ceremony commemorated the supreme sacrifice of Havildar (Late) Pranay Kalita, Rifleman (Late) Ratan Salam, and Rifleman (Late) Methna Konyak. These brave soldiers displayed extraordinary courage during a fierce encounter at Sajik Tampak, near the India-Myanmar border, on July 29, 2020, effectively preventing a greater loss of life.
A Defence spokesperson informed that the mission had been initiated to dismantle insurgent threats in the volatile region. As the unit—comprising a Junior Commissioned Officer and 14 personnel—was returning from their operation, they were ambushed in the evening. Insurgents launched a sudden assault using a remote-controlled improvised explosive device (IED), followed by heavy gunfire from advanced assault rifles and lathode grenades.
Despite being critically wounded, Havildar Kalita, Rifleman Salam, and Rifleman Konyak exhibited exemplary valor and composure under fire. Their swift retaliatory action forced the insurgents to retreat, saving the lives of their fellow soldiers and embodying the unyielding spirit of the Assam Rifles.
Tuesday’s event was attended by senior military officials and jawans, who gathered to honour their fallen comrades. Wreaths were reverently placed, and a Guard of Honour was presented, reinforcing the enduring values of duty, bravery, and sacrifice that define India’s armed forces.
In a heartfelt gesture of solidarity, the Assam Rifles also felicitated the Veer Naris—widows of the martyred soldiers—recognizing their strength and the immense personal sacrifices borne by military families. The honour underscored the vital role these families play in supporting the nation’s defence fabric.

According to the Defence spokesperson, the ceremony was not just a tribute to the soldiers’ heroism, but a reaffirmation of the Assam Rifles’ unwavering commitment to preserving their legacy, supporting bereaved families, and upholding the highest ideals of service and patriotism.
