It started 25 Years ago in the year 1991 when the first Passenger Reservation Centre was opened in Guwahati on 22.03.1991. Today N. F. Railway is operating 134 numbers of Passenger Reservation centres covering fur flung areas of the Northeast states, District Head Quarters and Tourist places.
Although, N. F. Railway accounts for only 3.19% of the total passenger earnings and 1.19% of the total passenger carried by the Indian Railway. N. F. Railway dedicated itself to reach every people staying in the remotest-remotest corner areas of North eastern Region to cater to the need of the reservation facility. This Railway with its determination connects the state capitals of 06 numbers of North eastern states when there is no internet access at all by directly linking the Passenger Reservation Centres of these State capitals beginning with Shillong (Meghalaya) on 28.03.1996 followed by Gangtok(Sikkim) on 24.01.1997, Agartala (Tripura) & Imphal (Manipur) on 25.01.1997 and Kohima( Nagaland), Aizwal (Mizoram) and Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh) on 20.05.1997 with Kolkata, paving the way for online Reservation facilities to the people of these Regions. The N. F. Railway is the only Railway which has established Passenger Reservation Centres at an altitude of 13200 ft at Thegu on 04.01.2003 in the state of Sikkim which is indeed the highest altitude Passenger Reservation Centre in the world.
With the commitment towards our soldiers serving at the border area of this Region, N. F. Railway has opened 23 exclusive Passenger Reservation Centres under operation of Defence accessible to all. This region is covered with lots of Flora and is ecologically very rich. To serve the growing tourism Industry of this Region, passenger Reservation centres has been open in tourist places like Darjeeling Station (a UNESCO Heritage site) in West Bengal, Tawang of Arunachal Pradesh and Majuli in Assam.
This Railways responsibility towards serving the student fraternity of this region passenger reservation facility under Post office operation are established near to various educational institutions, the one located at the IIT Guwahati Post Office in the year 30.03.2009 is among them. With the motto to reach & serve every corner of this region presently this Railway operates 60 exclusive Passenger reservation Centres at various Important station, 03 number at few important places with its own staff like the one at LGBI airport, 33 Passenger Reservation Centres under operation of State Government and 15 Passenger Reservation Centres under Department of Post covering District Head Quarters of this Regions. Besides the above this Railway also has given the access to avail the facility of both reserve and unreserved ticketing experience from the same window with its network of 102 locations of UTS cum PRS located at various stations of this Railway. To cater to the need of unreserved passenger ticketing this Railway has 275 UTS locations.
