Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif pleaded to the UN for his country’s entry into the Nuclear Suppliers’ Group in His speech on 21st September. Sharif said that Pakistan was a responsible nuclear weapon state and was fully capable of becoming a full fledged member of NSG. The truth behind his statement, however, is that Pakistan has been surrepticiously selling nuclear technology to other nations and is being seen as a threat to the world community in the realm of nuclear non-proliferation.
According to information, Pakistan has 120 nuclear weapons, which is more than the nuclear weapons with India or Israel. Pakistan, which is economically backward and politically unstable, has a nuclear weapons reserve and doesn’t have a no-first use policy like India. This is a major cause of concern for security in South Asia. An immature nuclear power, Pakistan has been using this threat to arm twist western powers into meddling in bilateral issues with India. According to an estimate, there has been a rise in the nuclear weapons reserve of Pakistan and it is estimated that after a decade, this number would rise three-times.
