Jan 25, 2017: Pride of the State, Dipa Karmakar has been conferred Padmasri Award-2017. Total 75 distinguished persons along with Gymnast Dipa Karmakar will be conferred this prestigious award by the President of India. “Padmasri Award for Dipa is the best gift to the State on the eve of R-Day”, said a jubilant Dipa supporter. Dipa’s coach Bisheshwar Nandi too expressed happiness and congratulated Dipa.
Padma Awards – one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.
The list comprises of 7 Padma Vibhushan, 7 Padma Bhushan and 75 Padma Shri Awardees. 19 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 5 persons from the category of foreigners, NRIs, PIOs and 6 posthumous awardees.
Among other recipient of Padma Awards from NE States, Late PA Sangma (Posthumous) of Meghalaya conferred Padma Vibhushan, Laishram Birendrakumar Singh and Wareppa Naba Nil of Manipur for Art-Music-theatre, Birkha Bahadur Limboo Muringla of Sikkim and Smt. Eli Ahmed from Assam, both for Literature & Education, Jitendra Nath Goswami from Assam for Science & Engineering have been conferred Padmasri Award.
