Mar 15, 2017: The first ever, in the history of Manipur, BJP-led government will be sworn-in today. Former Congress leader who joined BJP October 2016, N Biren Singh will be administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Najma Heptulla.
In 60-member Assembly, 31 MLAs are needed to form a government. In recent Assembly polls, Congress emerged as largest single party with 28 seats, BJP secured second position with 21 seats in the 60 member-Assembly. Both BJP and Congress staked claim to form the government.
However, with support regional parties like NPP, NPF and NDA ally LJP, BJP edged past Congress and set to form first BJP-led Government in Manipur. N. Biren Singh was unanimously elected the leader of the 21-member BJP legislature party on Monday.
A national level footballer turned journalist N. Biren Singh joined politics in 2002. He was elected to the Manipur Legislative Assembly from Democratic Revolutionary People’s Party which later merged with the Congress.
In 2003, he was appointed as Minister in the State Government and retained his Assembly seat in both 2007 and 2012 Assembly elections. In October 2016 Mr. Singh left Congress and joined BJP.
