Apr 30, 2017: Tribal wing of CPIM – Gana Mukti Parishad (GMP) – today literally sounded poll bugle immediately after two-day conference of the Parishad concluded today. Addressing a press conference today at Agartala, Both the president cum MP Jitendra Choudhury and secretary Radha Charan Debbarma trained guns of Union Government.
Issues like Triple Talak and Gou Rakhsha agitation are political ploy of BJP to divert people’s attention from burning issues, alleged Choudhury. Criticizing Union Government’s policies, Radha Charan said, Modi Govt’s decision to squeeze scope MNREGA and slashing fund allocation for Tribal sub-plan will hit tribal communities badly.
Exuding confidence, Choudhury said, Left Front will storm back into power and opposition parties will be routed. However, he accepted that BJP has emerged as a main opposition in the State.
Highlighting failures of Modi Govt, Choudhury said, the Government has failed to fulfill its pre-poll promises. “During run up to last Lok Sabha Poll, BJP promised to bring back the black money stashed in foreign banks and provide employment to 27 crore unemployed youths. However, Modi Government has failed to fulfill its promises so far”, he alleged.
Mentioning about several ‘anti-people’ policies of the Central Government, Radha Charan Debbarma said, GMP supporters will launch state wide protest programme in May and June. “Central Government reduced man-days under MNREGA, slashed funds for Tribal sub-plan from Rs 1000 crore for NE Region to meager Rs 500 crore. GMP vehemently opposes such decisions which will cast negative impact on development initiatives for the benefits of tribal communities”, he said and added GMP supporters will stage protest against such policies. Both Choudhury and Radha Charan blamed BJP for launching malicious campaign against CPM and indulging in divisive political game.
Political observers believe that leaders of GMP have indicated that the Parishad will swung into political action immediately keeping in mind ensuing Assembly Polls in 2018. Notably, due to historical reasons, GMP has solid organizational base among different tribal communities of the State. Even tribal based parties like INPT and IPFT lack such deep rooted connection with grass root tribal people, as much as GMP enjoys. It is certain that in the wake of emergence of BJP in the State, CPIM will depend upon GMP to secure tribal votes in its favour and GMP is also ready with all the ammunition in its armour.
