June 7, 2017: Two activists of a Hindu fringe group affiliated to Hindu Sena today disrupted a press conference of CPIM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury at New Delhi and allegedly roughed up him. The two activists were handed over to police.
As soon as the news of attack on Yechury reached Agartala the party bigwigs held a brief meeting and brought out a protest procession in the city. The massive protest march condemned the manhandling of Yechury and termed it as a barbaric reflection of growing intolerance and communal overtures. CPM State Secretary Bijan Dhar condemned the attack in strongest words.
The assault on CPM secretary is reflective of as to how the aggressive Hindu politics now hell bent to throttle the democratic views”, said a senior CPM leader. The procession was led by senior CPM leaders including Gautam Das.
Yechury, who was addressing a press conference on the violence in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur where five protesting farmers were killed in alleged police firing, described the attack on him as an attempt by the RSS “to silence the voices of dissent”.
“We will not be cowed down by Sangh goondagardi to silence us. This is a battle for the soul of India, which we will win,” he tweeted.
