September 06, 2017: Unable to tolerate alleged mental torture, her mother doused herself in petrol and set herself alight. Severely burnt, her mother ultimately succumbed to death in a hospital in Kolkata. Returning to her native place at Dharmanagar in North Tripura, the daughter – Baishakhi Debnath – lodged a Police complaint against five of her close relatives for abetting suicide and pushing her mother to death. Three weeks ticked on after she filed her complaint, however Police is still unable to arrest the accused persons and make any concrete headway.
Baishakhi Debnath – daughter of deceased Madhabilata Debnath – is now receiving threat calls and anonymous callers are reportedly creating pressure on her to withdraw the case. She went on Dharmanagar Women Police Station and urged for her own security.
However, she is not ready to succumb to pressure tactics and determined to keep on her fight to seek justice.
“I will not stop until guilty persons are being punished”, she said in a stern voice. Baishakhi today met media persons to narrate her plight and create pressure on Police who are allegedly not acting properly due to some unknown pressure.
Madhabilata Debnath – a retired school teacher was living in her parental house. She was married in 1992 and subsequently went for divorce in 1993. Since then along with her daughter – Baishakhi – she was staying independently at her parental home. Later, Baishakhi went to Delhi for higher studies. Meanwhile, Madhabilata remarried and her brothers and their sons reportedly did not accept the marriage.
Baishakhi had no qualm against the marriage. Even the Madhabilata and her husband were staying happily at her parental house, her brothers allegedly conspired to evict her from the house and gradually she became a victim of mental torture.
On fateful July 26, Madhabilata set herself alight and was admitted to local hospital with severe burn injuries. Later she was shifted to Kolkata, but she breathed her last on August 2 in Kolkata. Baishakhi after performing rituals, filed a Police complaint on August 12 at Dhamanagar Women PS against five of relatives including her youngest maternal uncle and two cousin-brothers and one cousin-sister.
“From the beginning Police did not show any interest, however, Police lodged a case under section 306. After that there is no further progress”, alleged Baishakhi.
Speaking to media persons, she seek help from all sections of the society in her fight for justice without inviting politics.
