Agartala: Tripura’s daughter Asmita Dey created history on Thursday by winning the women’s 48kg judo gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026. The judoka from Barpathari village in Belonia under South Tripura district defeated Canada’s Heidi Quach 2-1 in a gripping final to secure one of the biggest achievements of her career.

Asmita displayed exceptional composure and tactical brilliance throughout the contest. She stayed calm during the decisive moments and used disciplined defence along with timely attacks to overcome her experienced Canadian opponent.

Asmita is the talented daughter of late judoka Arjun Dey. Her remarkable achievement is the result of years of rigorous training under coach Manik Lal Deb at the Tripura Sports School after emerging from the remote village of Barpathari in Belonia.
With her victory, Asmita became the first athlete from Tripura to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Until now, the state’s best performance at the Games belonged to India’s gymnastics icon and Tripura’s pride, Deepa Karmakar, who won a bronze medal in gymnastics at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
On Friday, Asmita surpassed that milestone by claiming the coveted gold medal, creating a new chapter in Tripura’s sporting history.
The 23-year-old judoka, who is currently serving Uttra Pradesh Police, has sparked celebrations across the sporting fraternity with her outstanding achievement.

Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha congratulated the champion and described her victory as a historic moment for the state.
“Tripura’s daughter Asmita Dey has once again brought glory to the state on the international stage. The talented judoka from Belonia has achieved a historic feat by winning the gold medal in the 48 kg judo category at the Commonwealth Games.”
The Chief Minister said Asmita’s dedication, hard work and self-confidence would continue to inspire young sportspersons across the country.

Gold Dedicated to Supporters
Soon after her victory, Asmita dedicated the gold medal to everyone who supported her journey. She also thanked Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for providing her employment in the Uttar Pradesh Police.
“I am so happy with the gold. This is for all who supported me. I also want to thank Yogi ji for giving me the job in UP Police,” Asmita told IANS after the final.
