The Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Center (ABV-RCC) in Agartala successfully conducted State’s first “free case of fibula micro vascular reconstruction of mandible”.
Rita Tripura (26), a patient from South Tripura, had been suffering from dental problems for 6-7 months. She came to the Government Medical College and GB Pant Hospital in Agartala for outpatient treatment with pain and swelling in the gums of her right lower jaw.
The doctors then conducted all necessary tests to diagnose the woman’s dental disease. The OPG X-ray and CT scan revealed that the patient had an odontogenic tumor in her teeth. Histopathological report confirmed the matter and formed a medical team of expert doctors for this surgery.
The team included Dr. Kahamonuk Jamatia, Head of Office, in charge of the Dentistry Department of the Government Medical College and GB Pant Hospital in Agartala, Plastic Surgeon Dr. Pritam Das, Head of Neck Oncosurgeon Dr. Amalan Debbarma and Anesthesiologist Dr. Mrinal Debbarma of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Center.
Recently, the patient was admitted to the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Center and underwent a mandible resection and a free fibula flap (leg bone) micro vascular reconstruction surgery. It is to be noted that this type of surgery has been done for the first time in the state in this method.
The patient was then transferred to the ICU. Later, as the patient’s condition gradually improved, she was discharged from the hospital on November 6, 2023.
The patient’s relatives expressed their gratitude to the doctors of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Center (ABV-RCC) for successfully completing the state’s first jaw surgery.
This surgery is significant because it is the first time that this type of surgery has been performed in Tripura. It is a complex surgery that requires a team of expert doctors. The success of this surgery is a testament to the skill and expertise of the doctors at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Center.
