The much-awaited month long “Khelo Dharmanagar” was inaugurated on Saturday morning at BBI Maidan in Dharmanagar through a cricket match between Tripureswari Shishu Tirtha and Shiksha Bhavan Montessori on Saturday.

Speaking at the event, Sen said, “Through the Clean Dharmanagar, Green Dharmanagar program, it is possible to present a new Dharmanagar to the people of the state. Today, Dharmanagar has progressed a lot in terms of sports along with education and maintaining law and order.”

It is to be noted that a total of 18 competitions will be held in this one-month sports program, including cricket, volleyball, badminton, kabaddi, table tennis, carrom, chess, and yoga. The competitions will be held in both men’s and women’s categories. The winners will be awarded cash prizes.

 The inaugural ceremony was attended by Dharmanagar MLA and Speaker of the Tripura Assembly Bishwabandhu Sen, Chairman of the Dharmanagar Municipal Council Pradyut Deb Sarkar, Vice-Chairman Manju Nath, Executive Officer of the Dharmanagar Municipal Council Shyam Jyoti Jamatia, Officer of the Youth and Sports Department of North Tripura Amit Kumar Yadav, and convener of the event, eminent social worker Shyamal Kanti Nath.

The inauguration of the “Khelo Dharmanagar” competition took place through an art exhibition by over thousand artists. The convener, Shyamal Kanti Nath, inaugurated the flag-raising ceremony of the competition, which will last for a month. The mascot of the competition was named “Guddu”. Around three thousand participants will participate in the competition for a month. A prize money of Rs 4,82,000 from the MLA fund was donated.

Bishwabandhu Sen said that Netaji Jayanti, Basant Utsav, and Mahalaya were celebrated with special programs in Dharmanagar until now, but now “Khelo Dharmanagar” competition has been added.  

The program is also expected to help to promote a healthy lifestyle and encourage people to participate in sports, organizers said.
