Agartala May 6 (IANS): Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha announced a notable initiative to introduce ‘special executives’ as tourist police at major tourist destinations across the state, signaling a robust push to elevate Tripura tourism sector.

The announcement was made during an event in Chandibari, Amarpur sub-division of Gomati District, where Dr Manik Saha inaugurated and laid foundation stones for development projects worth ₹210 crore, aimed at transforming the region’s infrastructure and tourism appeal.

Tripura tourism

Speaking to a gathered crowd, Dr Saha emphasized that the BJP-led government, guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mantra of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ (Together with All, Development for All), is prioritizing tourism as a cornerstone of Tripura’s growth.

“Our state is blessed with unparalleled natural beauty and cultural heritage. From the ancient rock carvings of Unakoti to the majestic Ujjayanta Palace and the serene Rudrasagar Lake, Tripura is a treasure trove waiting to be explored,”

Tourist police

The introduction of tourist police, he added, will ensure visitor safety and enhance the overall experience, making Tripura a more attractive destination.

The Chief Minister highlighted several large-scale tourism projects underway, supported by Central government schemes like PRASAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive).

A flagship initiative includes a ₹67 crore project to develop Chabimura, a historic site in southern Tripura famed for its ancient rock carvings along the steep cliffs of the Gomati River.

“These investments are not just about infrastructure; they are about showcasing Tripura’s rich heritage to the world and creating economic opportunities for our people,”

“These investments are not just about infrastructure; they are about showcasing Tripura’s rich heritage to the world and creating economic opportunities for our people,” Saha remarked.

A New Era of Peace and Progress

Saha declared Tripura free from the shadow of insurgency, a significant milestone for a state once plagued by violence. “For decades, insurgency crippled development and tourism. Today, Tripura is a peaceful state.

The surrender of hundreds of militants from the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) last September, facilitated by a tripartite agreement in Delhi under Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s oversight, has paved the way for progress,” he said.

The improved law and order situation, he noted, has created a conducive environment for tourism and investment.

Reflecting on the state’s transformation since the BJP assumed power in 2018, Dr Saha contrasted the current administration’s achievements with the neglect of previous CPI-M-led Left Front and Congress governments.

“For 35 years, tourism was sidelined. Today, Tripura ranks second in the Northeast in GDP after Assam and second in per capita income after Sikkim. Our government is harnessing the state’s untapped natural resources and environmental beauty to drive sustainable growth,” he said.

Empowering Tribal Communities

Dr Manik Saha, who also oversees the Home Department, underscored the government’s commitment to the holistic development of Tripura’s Janajati (tribal) communities.

“Past governments exploited tribal communities for electoral gains. In contrast, our administration is working tirelessly to ensure their progress and well-being.

Today, tribal communities are content and aspire for peace and development, not disruption,” he said.

The ₹210 crore worth of projects launched in Amarpur, covering three Assembly constituencies, reflect the government’s focus on inclusive growth across urban and rural areas.

A Call for Collective Action

The Chief Minister called for a united effort to promote Tripura as a safe and vibrant tourism destination.

“Promoting our tourism sector requires collective responsibility. We must convey to the world that Tripura is a peaceful state with immense potential,” he urged.

The projects inaugurated in Amarpur, ranging from infrastructure upgrades to tourism-focused initiatives, are expected to create jobs, boost local economies, and enhance connectivity in Gomati District.

Tripura poised to shine

According to senior journalists of the State, as Tripura embarks on this ambitious journey to become a tourism powerhouse, the introduction of tourist police and strategic investments in iconic sites like Chabimura signal a new chapter of growth and opportunity. With peace restored and development accelerating, Tripura is poised to shine as a jewel of Northeast India. (Edited)
