Assam CM announced one more arrested from Barpeta in Assam for alleged Pro-Pakistan stance on social media. He asserted, No traitor will be spared—our government will deal with such elements with an iron hand

Guwahati, May 7 (IANS): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a fresh arrest on Tuesday in connection with alleged pro-Pakistan stance on social media, signaling the state government’s continued tough stance against anti-national expressions.

The latest individual taken into custody has been identified as Shahidul Islam, who was arrested from Barpeta district. This arrest brings the total number of people apprehended in the state for allegedly supporting Pakistan to 13 in the last few days.

CM Sarma, reaffirming his administration’s firm policy on the issue, stated, “A total of 43 individuals who displayed anti-national behavior by expressing sympathy for Pakistan have been jailed. No traitor will be spared—our government will deal with such elements with an iron hand.”

Among the 43 arrested is the prominent All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) legislator, Aminul Islam. The Dhing MLA from central Assam was the first to be arrested in this wave of action.

He was taken into custody on May 1 under sedition charges following his controversial remarks on the recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, which left over 20 people dead.

A widely circulated video clip on social media features Aminul Islam alleging that both the Pahalgam and the infamous Pulwama attacks were orchestrated conspiracies by the Central government.

His comments have drawn widespread condemnation and prompted strong legal action.

“In Pulwama, six years ago, when 42 jawans lost their lives in an RDX blast, I had said it was a conspiracy by the ruling government to influence the 2019 general elections,” Islam is heard saying in the video.

He further claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been spreading a narrative suggesting the Pahalgam attackers selectively targeted Hindus after asking their religion.

However, he asserted, “Eyewitnesses have stated that the terrorists opened fire indiscriminately without asking anyone’s identity. I suspect the same group that executed the Pulwama attack is also responsible for the Pahalgam incident.”

Islam went on to accuse the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government of exploiting communal narratives and warned that any failure to conduct a fair and transparent investigation would only deepen suspicions of a politically motivated conspiracy.

He also blamed both Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for allegedly creating division between communities.

However, in a bid to contain the political fallout, AIUDF supremo Badruddin Ajmal publicly distanced the party from Islam’s remarks.

“Our party, AIUDF, supports the Indian government’s stand. Terrorism has no religion, and those who indulge in violence and extremism cannot claim to represent Islam,” Ajmal said. (Edited)
