A tripartite meeting involving the Congress, CPIM, and TIPRA Motha Party took place on Saturday at the CPIM Office in Melarmath. The objective of the meeting was to explore possibilities of unity among the opposition parties for the forthcoming by-polls, countering the BJP.
The Left Front has announced its candidates for the upcoming by-elections in Dhanpur and Boxanagar Assembly Constituencies in Tripura. This development follows the tripartite discussions involving the opposition parties – TIPRA Motha, CPI-M, and the Congress party – held on Saturday. The scheduled by-elections are slated to take place on September 5 next.
During a press briefing held at the Agartala Melarmath party office, Narayan Kar, the Convenor of the Left Front, announced the chosen candidates. Kaushik Chanda has been nominated to contest from the Dhanpur constituency, while Mizan Hussain has been designated to contest under the CPIM banner from the Boxanagar assembly constituency. The formal submission of their nomination papers is planned for August 16.
Jitendra Choudhury, the State Secretary of CPIM, has extended an appeal for support and cooperation to the Congress and TIPRA Motha parties to thwart the BJP’s prospects in the upcoming by-polls.
Choudhury emphasized the necessity of preventing the split in opposition votes to ensure the BJP’s defeat. He urged the Congress and TIPRA Motha leaders to align their efforts with the Left Front.

Meanwhile, the Left Front’s announcement of its candidates for the by-elections has placed the ball in the court of the Congress and TIPRA Motha – for both of these parties, either they have to decide to support the CPIM-nominated candidates or put up their candidates. Political analysts believe that as Congress has negligible presence in the by-poll bound constituencies, it may refrain from the contest – but TIPRA Motha Party may put up its candidates.
Things will become clear partially by August 17 –the last date for nomination submission and the complete picture will come up on August 21 – the last date for nomination withdrawal.
Kar, on Sunday, took a confrontational stance against the ruling BJP, alleging that the impending by-elections are transpiring amidst a backdrop of nationwide tension. He asserted that the constitution and democracy are under siege by the BJP’s actions, characterizing the party’s approach as fascistic and asserting that the general public is bearing the brunt of its aggressive tactics.
