Agartala/Kohima, April 29 (IANS): Congress party activists held ‘Samvidhan Bachao’ (Save Constitution) campaign in Tripura and other northeastern states on Tuesday (April 29). Party workers said, the campaign, aimed at raising awareness about the alleged threats to the Constitution under the current BJP-led Central government, saw a massive turnout in Agartala.
During the rally in Agartala, Asish Kumar Saha, the Tripura state Congress president, voiced strong concerns over what he described as the “erosion of democracy” under the BJP’s rule. Saha alleged that the government was undermining constitutional rights, particularly the freedom of speech, and that communal and ethnic harmony were facing growing challenges.
“The current government is systematically trying to suppress free speech, which is a fundamental right enshrined in the Constitution,” Saha stated. He further expressed that the Congress party would relentlessly continue its efforts to protect the Constitution and uphold its core values.
Saha also criticized the recent passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in Parliament, which he claimed was done in a “highly undemocratic” manner. Additionally, he accused the central agencies, such as the CBI and ED, of being used as “tools by the BJP and RSS” to target opposition leaders.
He dubbed the National Herald Case against Sonai Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi as ‘fabricated’ and a distraction tool. He said, the central implicated the Gandhis in this case as Rahul kept on pressing for a caste census to safeguard the rights of SCs, STs and OBCs.
The TPCC under the leadership of its President @AsishSaha_INC ji, along with MLAs @SudipRoyBarman1 ji and Gopal Chandra Roy ji, organized a significant initiative as part of the Samvidhan Bachao Abhiyan.

“Thousands of Congress supporters, including a significant number of women, participated in the rally, which made its way through the heart of the capital city. This was part of a larger, coordinated effort across the northeastern states to engage the public in defending the Constitution”, party sources said.
Meanwhile, in Nagaland, the Pradesh Congress Committee held a gathering to spread awareness about the campaign. The event, attended by AICC Secretary-in-Charge for Nagaland Christopher Tilak and S. Supongmeren Jamir, the state party president and a Member of Parliament, highlighted the growing need for unity in safeguarding constitutional principles.

Tilak emphasized the importance of educating the public about the historical evolution of the Indian Constitution and the increasing threats it faces today. He reminded the audience that the Indian Constitution is a product of hard work by iconic leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. He also warned that it was now under threat from the BJP and the RSS.
