On the day when former Congress president Rahul Gandhi is actively campaigning for the party in Mizoram, the grand old party made a significant announcement on Monday by revealing its choice of 39 candidates for the upcoming 40-member assembly election.
This crucial list of candidates was disclosed following a key meeting led by incumbent Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, who chaired the Central Election Committee (CEC) gathering held in Mizoram. The meeting witnessed the presence of Rahul Gandhi alongside several other prominent party leaders.
In the party’s strategic lineup, State Unit Chief Lalsawta has been nominated to contest from the Aizawl West III ST seat. Additionally, the incumbent party MLAs, namely Lalrindika Ralte, Zodintluanga Ralte, Nihar Kanti Chakma, and C Ngunlianchunga, have been selected to represent their respective assembly seats.
However, the party notably refrained from announcing its candidate for the Palak ST assembly seat, which is currently held by the fifth sitting MLA, K. T. Rokhaw. In a surprising move, the party has decided to replace Rokhaw with IP Junior as the candidate for the assembly seat.
With voting scheduled for November 7 and the results to be revealed on December 3, the stage is set for a riveting electoral contest in Mizoram. Rahul Gandhi, a prominent Congress leader, commenced his campaign in the state with a padyatra, marking the start of his two-day visit to this picturesque and politically significant State, which was under Congress rule until 2018.
