CPIM & BJP clash on Ambedkar Jayanti celebrations at Kamalpur in Dhalai district of Tripura. Supporters of both parties blamed each other for the violence. Learn more about the political tension and local reactions.
Agartala, April 14 – What began as a solemn tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on his 135th birth anniversary turned into a scene of political unrest in Tripura, as clashes broke out between CPIM and BJP workers in the 46-Surma Assembly constituency under Dhalai district.
Dr. Ambedkar Jayanti Celebrated Across Tripura
Across Tripura, tributes poured in on Monday to honor the legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution and a tireless advocate for social justice and equality. Rallies, seminars, and cultural programs were organized in various districts, drawing participation from citizens, political parties, and civil society groups.
However, celebrations in Kamalpur, Dhalai district, took a violent turn, disrupting the peaceful spirit of Ambedkar Jayanti.
CPIM Accuses BJP Supporters of Unprovoked Attack
According to Anjan Das, CPIM’s Dhalai district secretary, the party had organized an event near the national highway between Chalubari and Bamancherra panchayats. As the program neared its conclusion, alleged BJP-backed miscreants reportedly attacked CPIM supporters.
Anil Das, a senior leader of the Tapshili Jati Samannay Samiti, suffered a serious head injury during the attack and was rushed to Kulai Hospital for treatment. Following the incident, CPIM staged a protest march in Kamalpur and submitted a deputation to Officer-in-Charge Sanjay Laskar, demanding justice and the arrest of the attackers.
BJP MLA Alleges Attack on Party Workers
In a counterstatement, Surma BJP MLA Swapna Das Pal claimed that BJP workers were peacefully celebrating Dr. Ambedkar’s birthday in a local market area when they were targeted by miscreants. BJP worker Prashanta Das reportedly sustained serious injuries during the altercation.
Both parties have traded accusations, fueling political tensions and leaving locals confused and distressed over the outbreak of violence during a day meant for unity.
Political Violence Overshadows Message of Equality
Local intellectuals and social activists have expressed strong condemnation over the incident, calling it a betrayal of Dr. Ambedkar’s values of non-violence and social harmony. “Using his birth anniversary as a backdrop for political confrontation is both tragic and shameful,” said a civic leader from Kamalpur.
Police have increased patrolling in Chalubari and Bamancherra to prevent further escalation. Law enforcement officials have urged all political groups to maintain peace and cooperate with the investigation.
