Blaze at Bru rehabilitation camp, at least 31 huts destroyed

A massive blaze reduced as many as 19 huts of the rehabilitated Bru Reangs to ashes at Hamsapara under Panisagar subdivision in North Tripura on Saturday morning.

 

In addition 12 more huts were dismantled in an attempt to stop the fire from spreading and to bring the fire under control. However, there is no report of any casualty, so far.

 

It may be mentioned here as many as 16 Bru Reangs were charred to death in a fire incident on March 20, 2011 at Naisingpara under North Tripura District. The entire Bru refugee camps were gutted.

 

This time there was fortunately no causality and none was hurt also but the Brus lost their important papers and documents. Total loss is estimated be approximately Rs 60 lakh. The fire broke out at around 8.30 am and the cause of the fire was suspected to be short circuit.

 

Meanwhile, Bruno Msha, General Secretary Mizoram Bru Displaced People’s Forum demanded that government should compensate the affected Brus for the loss and temporary shelters should be constructed immediately so that the rehabilitated Brus do not spend cold winter nights in the open field.
