The newly built concrete bridge over the Khowai River at Dasamighat atTeliamura in Tripura has been named after freedom fighter Sushil Kumar Dey who fought against the British along with Surya Sen and Pritilata Waddedar.
Chief Whip of the State Assembly Kalyani Roy formally inaugurated the bridge on Monday in presence of chairman of Teliamura Municipal Council Rupak Sarkar, son of the late freedom fighter Kajal Baran Dey and other dignitaries.
Freedom fighter Sushil Kumar Dey was a resident of Joynagar in Teliamura. He was one of the fighters who participated in the Chittagong British Armoury Raid led by Surya Sen. Late Dey along with Pritilata Waddedar took part in the attack on European Club at Chittagong. He was tried under Arms Explosive Act in 1933 and sent to Andaman Jail for seven years.
Sushil Kumar Dey had to court arrests several times including in the Dhorola Political Shooting case. After India attained Independence, he was released from prison. Later, he settled down at Joynagar in Teliamura.
With his financial assistance, Masterda Surya Sen Trustee Board was formed. The Trustee is continuing to provide service for the welfare of the people. A bust of Masterda Surya Sen was also installed at Teliamura.
Speaking on the occasion, Kalyani Roy said people will always remember the contribution of the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the cause of the country’s independence. “I am feeling honoured after getting an opportunity to inaugurate the bridge in the name of the freedom fighter”, Roy commented.
