Close on the heels of CPIM National General Secretary Sitaram Yechury’s statement regarding alliance with secular parties, Congress and Tipra Motha welcomed the decision.
In its reaction to the proposed alliance, ruling BJP commented Congress and CPIM had a secret tie which is now coming to light.
CPIM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said on January 11, the Central Committee of the party had given green signals for forging alliance with like-minded democratic and secular forces like Congress and Tipra Motha.
Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman hailed the decision of the CPIM. He said all democratic non-communal forces must be united for the sake of the people of Tripura as defeating the BJP is the need of the hour.
Chairman of Tipra Matha and MDC Pradyot Kishore Deb Barman said CPIM is yet to formally discuss the issue of seat sharing. He, welcomed the CPIM’s decision of alliance saying that the latter will have to give Tipra Motha a written assurance supporting Greater Tipraland.
Debbarman said the central government always ignored the demands of the people. They did politics only in the name of religion and caste.
Now if the CPIM wants an alliance by supporting our demand, it will definitely be considered, Debbarman commented.
Meanwhile, the ruling BJP termed CPIM’s decision as an attempt to fool people of Tripura.
BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharjee said the secret relationship between Congress and CPIM is nothing new. With their opportunistic politics, they try to fool people.
Bhattacharjee claimed CPIM ruled in Tripura for 25 years with the help of Congress.
Earlier they were secretly in love, now it has come out in the open. But, the people will give them befitting reply in the assembly elections, he asserted.
Political analysts of the State opined the Opposition parties have almost no option except going for an alliance in view of BJP’s dominance in the State politics well backed by mega campaign blitz.
The alliance stretegy did not work for Congress or CPIM in West Bengal. It remains to be seen as to how it goes down in Tripura and which party reaps benefits of the alliance or faces electoral losses.
