In view of escalating India-Pak tension, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma appeals for cancelling Bihu festivities.
Guwahati, May 9 (IANS): With escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged citizens to call off the remaining Bihu Festivals in the state.
“Over the past few weeks, Assam has celebrated Bihu with immense enthusiasm and cultural pride. I extend heartfelt gratitude to everyone for their active participation in these joyous events.
However, in light of the evolving situation, I request that all Bihu functions scheduled from May 10 onward be respectfully cancelled. Let us conclude this festive period with the same solidarity and spirit with which it was observed,” said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a public appeal.
Rongali Bihu, the most vibrant festival of Assam, marks the Assamese New Year and is typically observed with traditional music, dance, and community gatherings across the state.
This marks the first time a sitting Chief Minister of Assam has made such a public request regarding the cancellation of Bihu festivities.

The Chief Minister’s appeal comes shortly after the Indian Armed Forces successfully repelled multiple drone and missile attacks launched by the Pakistan military along the Western Border during the night of May 8–9.
According to official sources, these attacks were intercepted and neutralized without any reported damage.
Simultaneously, Pakistani troops carried out several ceasefire violations along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Army responded with precision, delivering a strong and appropriate counter to the provocations.
“The Indian Army remains fully committed to defending the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Any hostile attempt will be countered with decisive force,” the Army said in an official statement.
In a significant development, Indian defense forces successfully neutralized attempts by Pakistan to target military installations in Jammu, Pathankot, Udhampur, and other sensitive locations.
The counter-offensive not only destroyed incoming drones and missiles but also resulted in the downing of Pakistan’s Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft—dealing a major blow to Islamabad’s surveillance and battlefield coordination capabilities.
