Tripura Police on Sunday night apprehended a State government employee with fake Indian currency.
The incident took place at Sonamura sub-division in Sepahijala district.
Banoj Biplab Das, the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Sonamura said police had received specific information that fake Indian Currency had been distributed in the Sonamura sub-division market.
Police personnel of Sonamura PS received information on January 30 last that one person of Madhuban area near Sonamura College had stashed huge fake Indian currency.
Later Police force reached the area and nabbed one Jayanta Debbarma with 20 notes of Rs 2000 totaling Rs 40,000. Debbarma was planning to flee away. However, Police arrested him with the fake currency.
“Acting on a tip-off, we have sent two police personnel to investigate the matter. Based on the investigation, they have arrested the person identified as Jayanta Debbarma with fake Indian currency. Jayanta is a government employee and a resident of Melaghar village in Sonamura sub-division,” Police sources said.
It is learnt, arrested Jayanta Debbarma collected the fake currency from the house of one Aatiul Islam – a resident of Thakurpara near Sonamura College. The wife of Aatiul gave the fake currency to Jayanta Debbarma who was entrusted with circulating the fake currency in the markets.
There were allegations that fake currencies were making an inroad from Bangladesh into markets of Tripura. Rackets involved in fake currency are deft and professional – and it is very difficult for the common people to identify which one is an original note and which is fake.
After arresting Jayanta Debbarma, it is expected that Police would be able to find out the other players involved in the fake currency menace.
