Italy survives spirited fightback to edge Brazil in 5-goal thriller at FIFA U-20 World Cup

In an enthralling match of skill and determination, Italy emerged victorious with a narrow 3-2 win over Brazil in a gripping encounter at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Argentina 2023.

Cesare Casadei, the standout player for Italy and on loan from Chelsea, delivered a stellar performance that proved pivotal to his team's triumph. It was Casadei's exceptional flick-on that set up Matteo Prati to head home the opener, breaking the deadlock at the back post. Demonstrating his prowess, Casadei then doubled Italy's lead by capitalizing on a loose ball with a powerful header.

Fifa-U20-WCThe drama continued as Casadei skillfully deceived Arthur and won a penalty, which he coolly converted himself, further extending Italy's advantage.

However, Brazil were determined to fight back and launched a spirited comeback in the second half.

Sebastiano Desplanches, Italy's goalkeeper, pulled off a remarkable block to deny Brazil an early goal.

But his efforts couldn't thwart Marcos Leonardo, whose well-placed snapshot found the bottom corner, providing a glimmer of hope for the Brazilian side.

Leonardo went on to secure his second goal of the match, adding to the tension and setting the stage for a nail-biting finale. However, Italy's resilient defense held firm, allowing them to secure a hard-fought victory and kick-start their Group D campaign on a winning note.

Notably, Brazil's return to the tournament after missing out on qualification in the previous two editions was met with a valiant effort. It was the first time in 16 years that Brazil conceded more than two goals in a FIFA U-20 World Cup match. Their last such defeat occurred in 2007 when Spain emerged victorious with a 4-2 scoreline in extra time, with Gerard Pique among the scorers.

Italy's triumph against Brazil not only showcased their mettle but also set the stage for an exhilarating tournament as the world's most promising young footballers battle it out for international glory. (Edited)
