Residents of Kanchanpur under the North District of Tripura have blocked the Dasda-Anandabazar road since early Wednesday morning.
The agitating villagers are demanding immediate repair of the road which is in precarious condition.
The road developed potholes and after a downpour, the water filled potholes pose serious challenges before the commuters. Even the pedestrians find it difficult, said a local villagers.
"The 13-kilometer stretch has been in a poor condition for the past five years, causing immense difficulties for the 50,000 people residing in the area", the villagers alleged.
According to locals, they lodged several complaints citing the poor condition of the Dasda-Anandabazar Road. However, the Public Works Department (PWD) did not bother to address the issue and repair the road, villagers alleged.
They argued, "The lack of repair has resulted in frequent accidents and poses a significant challenge for daily commutes, especially for students and those seeking medical attention".
The ongoing blockade has caused long queues of vehicles on both sides of the road putting the passengers in helpless condition.
Kanchanpur Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) and Dasda RD Block BDO reached the spot to negotiate with the protesters.
However, the residents have insisted that they will not withdraw the blockade until the District Magistrate (DM) of North Tripura district arrives to address their concerns.
The residents have expressed anger at the negligence of the PWD officials and demanded immediate action to repair the road.
The situation remains tense as discussions between the administration and the protesters continue.
