The 12th National Voters’ Day was observed across the State on Tuesday. Several programmes were held aiming to encourage increasing participation of people in exercising their voting rights. The Election Commission of India has announced that four times in a year, new voters would get a chance to enroll their names.
A robust democratic system is one of the prime factors for the existence of society and a nation. For this reason, the architects of the Indian Constitution were determined to strengthen the democracy by exercising the voting rights of every section of the society. Election Commission was set up to achieve this objective, Chief Secretary of Tripura Kumar Alok said in Agartala on Tuesday.
Inaugurating the State-level 12th National Voters Day programme in Agartala today, Kumar Alok said every eligible citizen of the country will have to exercise his/her voting right for strengthening the democracy. To ensure participation of young generation, minimum age for casting votes pulled down to 18 years from 21 years.
“Besides, to ensure more participation of Divyangajan people, steps have been made to make polling stations Divyangajan friendly”, Kumar Alok said.
In today’s programme, the Chief Secretary unveiled a Calendar for generating awareness among the voters and the CMS based Official Website of Chief Election Commission of Tripura.
Speaking on the occasion, State Chief Election Commission Kiran Gitte said, Voters would get chance four times in a year to include their names in the Voters’ list.
“As per the decision of the Election Commission, new Voters will be able to get enrolled on January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1 every year”.
He also mentioned more than 41 thousand new voters were enrolled in the State this year. He urged people to participate in exercising voting rights to strengthen the democracy.
Divyangajan Swimmer Samir Barman was felicitated in today’s programme. Among others, secretary of the Social Welfare and Social Education Chaitanya Murti and DM West Debapriyo Bardhan also spoke on the occasion.
