A photojournalist, namely Sujit Acharjee who is associated with a local electronic media outlet, was brutally attacked by a group of assailants in Tripura on Sunday.
Police apprehended six individuals linked to the assault. The suspects include Shubhrajit Debnath of Ramnagar Road No. 11, Ripon Das from Joynagar Dashami Ghat, Ajay Deb of Khayerpur Chandpur, Monty Malakar from Hapania, and Santu Roy and Bapan Das from Bhattapukur area in Agartala.
Recounting the incident, Sujit said that he had gone to the Malaynagar Bypass on Sunday for live coverage of the Anukul Thakur's festival.
Later, while he was returning home in his bike, a car overtook him and rammed into his bike. He said, a group of 5-6 youths including the driver with whom Acharjee had an argument came out of the car and started assaulting him with iron rods, helmets and other objects.
Local residents who witnessed the attack intervened and managed to restrain the attackers, later handing them over to the police. Sujit was rushed to the hospital with injuries to his head and body.
Following the ordeal, Sujit filed a complaint with the Amtali Police station, prompting police to arrest the six accused. The suspects are currently detained at Amtali police station, where a case has been registered, and investigations are ongoing.
The attack has sparked outrage among the media fraternity. On Monday, members of the Tripura Photojournalist Association visited Amtali police station, demanding strict action against the attackers.
The Tripura Working Journalists Association also condemned the incident, expressing concern over the growing violence against journalists. They emphasized the need for enhanced security measures for media professionals and insisted on exemplary punishment for the culprits.
In protest, journalists staged a sit-in near Amtali police station, later meeting with Additional SP Chiranjib Chakraborty to press for justice.
Senior journalist and Headlines Tripura editor Pranab Sarkar voiced strong disapproval of the incident, noting that it was not an isolated case.
Veteran journalist Sanit Debroy also raised concerns over the safety of late-night workers in the city.
Highlighting that Sujit had undergone major surgery just weeks ago, he criticized the lack of adequate night patrolling, which he said compromises public safety.
Responding to the journalists’ grievances, Additional SP (Urban) Chiranjib Chakraborty assured that the case is being thoroughly investigated and that the culprits will face appropriate legal consequences.
