Reang Tribe Threatens NH Blockade Over 'Delayed' PM Janman Housing Scheme in Tripura

The Samajpati of the Reang tribe has threatened to block the national highway in Tripura if the government does not take immediate steps to distribute houses under the PM Janman Scheme housing project for the Reang tribe in the Kakrachhara ADC Village and Uttar Gokulnagar ADC Village of the Mungiakami block under Khowai District of Tripura.

Samajpati of the Reang tribe, Kripajoy Reang alleged funds were allocated under the PM Janman Scheme to construct pucca houses for the socio-economic upliftment of the Reang tribe in the state.

"Accordingly, along with the rest of the state, the Mungiakami block administration selected the names of Reang beneficiaries residing in Kakrachhara ADC Village and Uttar Gokulnagar ADC Village in January this year", Kripaday Reang told the media.

He alleged, even as Reang beneficiaries in other parts of the state have received government houses, the distribution of government houses to beneficiaries residing in Kakrachhara and Uttar Gokulnagar ADC Villages has been withheld for some unknown reason. Even though six months have passed since the publication of the list, they are still deprived of government benefits.

Kripajoy further alleged repeated appeals to the local administration and the PWD department fell on deaf ears.

Notably, there are 516 Reang families in Kakrachhara ADC Village alone. Of these, 483 families have REGA Job Cards and 173 beneficiaries have been selected in the PM Janman Scheme.

In view of the emerging situation, a meeting under the leadership of the Samajpati was held in which a decision to block the National Highway on July 9 was taken.

Talking about their demand, the Samajpati said, the state government take necessary steps to expedite the process of PM Janman housing scheme implementation. Otherwise, the Reang people of the area will be forced to launch a bigger agitation.
