Scientists looking up at butterflies to optimize solar panel: Tripura ICA Minister Sushanta Chowdhury in Butterfly Festival

Butterflies remain a major aesthetics attraction for ages to common people as well as artists. Recently, this wonderful creation is heating up the solar energy sector as scientists are engrossed in researching on solar energy generation using the intricate design of wings of butterflies, said Information and Cultural Affairs ICA) Minister of Tripura Sushanta Chowdhury in an event at Heritage park in Agartala on Sunday (Dec 4).

 

Butterfly-Festival-Tripura-solar-panelThe Minister inaugurated a ‘Butterfly Festival’ at the Heritage Park today – the Festival was organized by the Forest Department of Tripura.

 

Explaining the purpose of the Butterfly Festival, Sushanta Chowdhury said, butterflies play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. It helps to pollinate plants and through pollination, plants reproduce.  

 

Recently butterflies wings are inspiring the scientists to conduct research on improving solar panels. Studies have found that wings of butterflies are designed in such a way that it can efficiently absorb solar energy in a particular manner. Scientists are studying the behavior of butterflies to optimize solar panels, Chowdhury commented.

 

He also mentioned butterflies can be exported also and people will be able to make an earning out of it.

 

“In the name of development, trees are being sacrificed – this is not desirable. While a tree is a part of a forest, butterflies along with other living creatures indicate wellness of the forest. Number of butterflies and its natural habitat are dwindling owing man-made pollution and climate change. It is important that all of us come forward to preserve the butterflies now”, the Minister said.    

 

Among others, Sabhadhipati of West Tripura Zilla Parishad Antara Sarkar Deb, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) K S Sethi, Tripura Scatform Project Chief Executive Officer and Project Director Dr. Avinash Kanfare and other officials were present in the inaugural programme of the “Butterfly Festival-2022”.
