An atrial septal defect is a hole in the wall between the two upper chambers of the heart. It is a congenital defect, meaning it is present at birth.

ASDs can be small or large. Small ASDs often close on their own without treatment. Large ASDs can cause heart failure and other problems.

There are two main types of treatment for ASDs - surgical repair and interventional closure.
Surgical repair is the traditional treatment for ASDs. It involves opening the chest and sewing up the hole in the heart.

Interventional closure is a newer treatment that works through a small insertion depending upon the device used and it does not require opening the chest involves inserting a device through a small incision in the leg. The device closes the hole in the heart without the need for surgery.
