The Tripura Government is set to introduce the distribution of various types of spices through Fair Price shops, for the first time in the State.
The initiative has been taken to enhance the effectiveness of the Public Distribution System (PDS). Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha will formally inaugurate the initiative on May 16 at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhawan in Agartala.
According to Food, PDS, and Consumers' Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, packaged spices such as chilly, turmeric, jeera, and dhaniya from the State spice manufacturing company, Longtharai will be made available at subsidized rates in all of the 2050 Ration shops.
This move aims to ensure that every household can access spices conveniently. The selection of Longtharai for this initiative was carried out through a tender process.
The decision to make spices available in Fair Price Shops was reached during a preparatory meeting chaired by Minister Chowdhury on Sunday (May 14).
As part of the launch ceremony on May 16, the Chief Minister will distribute packaged spices to eight beneficiaries representing the eight districts. This initiative is expected to benefit approximately 900,000 ration card holders in the State.
Additionally, the government plans to include other essentials like mustard oil for distribution through the PDS.
The meeting held today was attended by Secretary of Food, PDS, and Consumers' Affairs, Ravel Hemendra Kumar, Director Nirmal Adhikari, Additional Director Animesh Debbarma, Director of the Information & Cultural Affairs Department Bimbisaar Bhattacharjee, Owner of Longtharai, Ratan Debnath, and other officials.
Minister Chowdhury also highlighted the government's other initiatives, including the One Country One Ration Card system implemented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which has provided relief to the impoverished population.
The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, launched nationwide, has doubled the ration allocation for beneficiaries. Through this program, essential food supplies are being delivered to underprivileged regions across the country.
Chowdhury further emphasized the efforts of the Tripura government, led by Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, in improving the quality of life for the common people of the state.
He said the government's goal is to offer affordable new food products to the public through the public distribution system, thereby redefining the notion of easy living.
