The embankment along the banks of the Manu River in Kailashahar under the Unakoti District of Tripura is in a precarious condition.
The present situation is threatening catastrophic flooding if not addressed before the monsoon season, Congress MLA claimed.
Congress MLA Birajit Sinha, accompanied by the District Congress president and Vice Chairman of Gour Nagar Panchayat Committee, Badrul Zaman, along with local journalist, conducted an urgent inspection of the embankment spanning various areas under the Kailashahar subdivision on Friday.
According to the visiting team, the tour, which covered roughly 15 kilometers, painted a grim picture. The inspection of key areas like West Kaulikura, Thathamara, West Kamrangabari, East Durgapur, Chaintal, Sonamara, and West Gobindapur revealed a series of issues including breaches, low sections, and undersized segments of the embankment.
Local residents voiced their frustrations, pointing out that the daily passage of sand trucks and heavy vehicles over the already fragile structure has significantly worsened its condition. They further criticized the seasonal approach of the administration, which only provides temporary fixes by piling sandbags during the monsoon, neglecting any long-term solutions post-season.
Following the inspection, MLA Birajit Sinha emphasized the urgent need for intervention by the state government.
He warned that without immediate action, Kailashahar could be submerged during the next monsoon. He highlighted another critical issue - the Sluice gates near the embankment, meant for water drainage, have been out of service for years due to lack of maintenance.
These sluice gates, built alongside the embankment approximately four decades ago, have never been refurbished, and no official from the Flood Control Department has conducted inspections in recent times, leading to the current deplorable state.
In view of the emerging situation, Sinha announced that the Congress party would take action. A protest is planned for 10 am on January 25, where they will block the Kailashahar-Kumarghat road, demanding immediate repairs or reconstruction of both the embankment and the Sluice gates.
Later, a long march will commence from Tilabazar to the India-Bangladesh border at Debipur in Rangautti Gram Panchayat, protesting Bangladesh's unauthorized construction of an embankment near the international boundary.
The situation underscores a dire need for immediate governmental action to prevent potential disaster and highlights the long-standing neglect of essential infrastructure in the region, Congress leaders commented.
