Tripura News: Youth Arrested for Human Trafficking

The Agartala Government Railway Police Station (GRPS) apprehended a youth, allegedly involved in human trafficking, from Matai Bazar under Belonia Police station in South Tripura District on Sunday early morning. The arrested youth was identified as Jhutan Datta (28), son of Lt. Jyoti Lal Datta. He was arrested on charges related to international human trafficking. Datta had been on the police’s wanted list in an old case (case no. 190/2023) when four illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators were detained at Agartala Railway Station.

According to Officer-in-charge Tapas Das, during the interrogation of those detained Bangladeshi nationals, Jhutan Datta’s name emerged as the individual who facilitated their illegal border crossing. Acting on specific information, the police conducted a raid in Matai Bazar under Belonia Police Station today early morning resulting in Datta’s detention.

Notably, this is not Datta’s first brush with the law. Previously, he had been apprehended by the Guwahati Branch of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on similar charges of human trafficking.

The accused will be presented before the court for further legal proceedings, as confirmed by the police authorities.
