The Higher Education in Tripura is set to embark on an ambitious plan to push up the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GRE).

Agartala (Tripura) May 27: The Tripura government has set a goal to raise the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) to 30 by the year 2030, an official announced on Tuesday.

While addressing a press conference at the Secretariat, Special Secretary of Education Raval Hamendra Kumar stated that the current Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) for higher education in the state stands at 20.7 (inclusive of both males and females) for the academic year 2021–2022.

He mentioned that the department is prioritizing an increase in enrolment in the coming years, aiming to achieve a GER of 30 by 2030.

This will require the establishment of new colleges and expansion of existing intake capacities, along with the necessary infrastructure and human resources.

The Higher Education Department has declared that admissions will begin in three newly established General Degree Colleges (GDCs) in Tripura for the academic session 2025–26.

The Special Secretary added that the department plans to initiate the admission process for 25 existing colleges in addition to the three new ones.

He further informed that the undergraduate B.A. Programme will be launched at IASE, Kunjaban, and CTE, Kumarghat.

He explained that the new General Degree Colleges at Korbook, Ambassa, and Kakraban have been set up to provide easier access to students who have completed higher secondary education, allowing them to enroll in nearby colleges.

Simultaneously, in line with the NEP 2020 guidelines aimed at making all institutions multidisciplinary, the government has introduced undergraduate B.A. programmes at IASE, Kunjaban, and CTE, Kumarghat starting from the 2025–26 academic year, transforming these institutions into multidisciplinary ones.

Speaking to the media, he mentioned that the total intake capacity for first-semester admissions during the 2024–25 academic year was 31,379.

With the addition of three new GDCs and the launch of multidisciplinary courses at IASE, Kunjaban, and CTE, Kumarghat, the overall intake capacity will increase by 575 seats, raising the total capacity for the 2025–26 session to 31,954.

The official also outlined several recent initiatives undertaken by the Higher Education Department.

These include the introduction of multidisciplinary subjects at the Institute of Advanced Studies in Education (IASE), Kunjaban, and the College of Teacher Education (CTE), Kumarghat.

Additionally, the former building of Sabroom English Medium H.S. School has been acquired by Michael Madhusudan Datta College, Sabroom, for campus expansion and the establishment of a Science Campus under the department’s capacity-building efforts.

A Government Technical University is planned to be set up at the TIT Campus, while a Government Women’s University will be established at the Women’s College Campus in Agartala.

Draft legislation for these universities is currently under preparation. The Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC) is also conducting recruitment for 201 Assistant Professor positions across various subjects.

TBSE results

Notably, according to a press release, approximately 17,052 students passed the Higher Secondary examination conducted by the Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE) this year.

Additionally, 7,027 students cleared the exam from Vidyajyoti CBSE schools managed by the state government.

An estimated 10,000 more students passed from other CBSE-affiliated central and private schools.

Taking into account students from TBSE, CBSE, ISC, and open boards, the total number of students who passed the Higher Secondary examination this year is projected to be around 28,000.

The combined intake capacity for major subjects in General Degree Colleges stands at around 31,954. However, demand varies, with some colleges and subjects experiencing low interest, leaving seats vacant, while other institutions—especially prominent colleges in Agartala—face very high demand.

Subjects such as History, Political Science, Education, Bengali, Kokborok, and English are seeing significantly greater demand compared to others.

To ensure transparency and merit-based admissions, the entire admission process will be conducted online this year via the Government of India’s SAMARTH portal.

This procedure is now mandatory, as directed by Tripura University and in line with the Ministry of Education’s guidelines. All students must apply for admission exclusively through the SAMARTH portal.

Infrastructural development

The press release also mentioned that construction of new Science Buildings has begun at MBB College, Agartala (Rs. 77 crore) and Netaji Subhas Mahavidyalaya, Udaipur (Rs. 40 crore).

Vertical expansion of the IASE building at Kunjaban, Agartala is underway with an allocated budget of Rs. 9.97 crore.

Infrastructure development for the National Law University (NLU), including academic and administrative buildings, has commenced with a budget of Rs. 126 crore.

Construction of the Boys’ Hostel for NLU is progressing at a cost of Rs. 30.50 crore, while the Girls’ Hostel is being built at a cost of Rs. 26.52 crore.

Additionally, work has started on a new Polytechnic building at Narsingarh, adjacent to the existing TIT Campus, with a sanctioned cost of Rs. 137 crore.
